Sustainability

In the forests of Germany and Europe, the walnut tree is rather rare and is hardly used for forestry purposes. In North America, particularly in the USA, the walnut tree is widespread. Its wood is considered one of the finest and most expensive woods in the world. Products made from walnut wood are characterized by an exceptionally long lifespan, allowing furniture and floors to maintain their value and beauty for many years. Despite longer transport routes, walnut wood remains an environmentally friendly material. The durability of the wood also contributes to its sustainability.

Walnut wood

Nussbaum wood is primarily characterized by its dark coloring, which ranges from light to blackish brown, and features a distinctive grain. The color and structure of the wood depend on its location, with the grain being cloudy, flamed, or striped. The hardwood is particularly used for high-quality furniture and parquet flooring indoors. The wood is hard, tough, and flexible, but not very elastic. It can be excellently processed, turned, planed, polished, and stained. Surface treatments can also be carried out without difficulties.

Versatility

Due to its decorative, shape-stable, and durable properties, walnut can be well used in instrument making, for gun stocks, wall paneling and panels, parquet flooring, furniture, or wainscoting. However, it is relatively expensive and only available in limited quantities as a domestic wood. For outdoor construction, other wood species such as oak or mahogany are more suitable, as untreated walnut is not very resistant to fungi, pests, or insects. If the fibers run straight, walnut can be easily processed mechanically. Surface treatments and gluing can also be carried out without any problems.

You should avoid that

If you want to avoid darkening of the wood, you should not expose walnut to direct sunlight. When screwing and nailing, it is advisable to pre-drill as much as possible. To avoid staining, you should also refrain from using highly alkaline adhesives. Since walnut dries slowly, the technical drying process should be conducted with great caution, as the wood is also prone to discoloration. Under weather conditions, use resistant fastening materials and fittings, as iron metals can cause bluish-gray discoloration. For fastening materials, our wooden nails are suitable, for example.
